It was a night for nature on 13th February when Dave Salter judged the Southern Photographic Society’s latest Open competition.
It was the fourth competition of the season and the second open, and there were 18 print and 45 digital entries featuring landscapes, people, still life, sport, wildlife, travel, close-up/macro and more.
An experienced photographer and member of the WPS, Dave said it was a “privilege” to be asked to judge for a second time and praised the quality of the entries. He offered general advice as well as suggestions on individual images throughout the evening.
It was a good night for Steve Johnstone, who won both sections, and all of the top eight images represented nature in one form or another. The results were:
Print section:
1st: “Yellow Dung Fly” by Steve Johnstone – 20 points
= 2nd: “In The Light” by Seamus Whelan – 19 points
= 2nd: “Hawkeye Sparrowhawk” by Steve Johnstone – 19 points
= 2nd: “Pine Marten” by Peter Skears – 19 points
Digital section:
= 1st: “Gannet in Flight” by Steve Johnstone – 20 points
= 1st: “Horsefly Everyone’s Friend” by Steve Johnstone – 20 points
= 3rd: “Bird of Paradise” by Seamus Whelan – 19 points
= 3rd: Yellow on Yellow” by Andrea Thrussell – 19 points
Congratulations to those above, thank you again to Dave, and well done to everyone for a great selection of images.
Our meeting on Wednesday 28th February will feature “digital art”, mobile phone photography, and club president Brian Goldie’s presentation on AI imagery.
