There was an excellent turnout on Wednesday for the results of the ‘Decay’ competition.
Former member Dave Salter returned to judge at the SPS for the first time, taking charge of the first of the eight point-scoring competitions. Dave began by explaining how he approaches a themed competition as a photographer by looking up the definition(s) of the theme title and then working to produce images with impact and creativity.
Moving on to his approach to judging, he explained that every image started out with an initial score of 20 points and he then deducted points depending on the scenarios and subjects chosen, technical competence, and how the work was edited and presented.
Unusually, Dave decided to award joint first and joint second places in both the print and digital sections because he felt all eight images deserved those points and places.
The results were as follows:
Print Section:
Equal 1st: “Bad Apple” by Jim Gibson and “Rust and Lock” by Georgina Shaw – 20 points
Equal 2nd: “Lemon” by Seamus Whelan and “Rusty Lock” by Andrea Thrussell – 19 points
Commended with 18 points each (foot of page):

“Coastal Erosion” by Jim Gibson
“Sunflower” by Sue Clegg
Digital Section:
Equal 1st: “Dying Rose” and “Rusty Beer Token” both by Brian Goldie – 20 points
Equal 2nd: “Seedy” by Simon Jennings and “A Dying Industry” by Brian Goldie – 19 points
Highly Commended: “Beauty In Decay” by Seamus Whelan – 18 points
Commended: “Dandelion” by Seamus Whelan – 17 points
