The Southern Photographic Society won the island’s 3-Way Battle on Friday for the first time since 2008.
The judge, David Silvester, is well-known to all three societies and he led us through the 90 images in a confident and relaxed style, giving a balance of critique and advice with a touch of humour, and offering to speak to anyone about their images at the end of the night.
Although we know he is not over-generous with his scores, David awarded a number of 18s and stretched to a 19 for the overall winning image.
The totals were very close indeed with just seven points between the societies;
Southern: 478 points
IOMPS: 474
Western: 471
The overall winning image was ‘Stampede’, a monochrome image by Dorothy Flint of the Western, which earned the night’s top score of 19 points.

Our top-scoring images with 18 points were “Alien Insect” by Steve Johnstone, “Solitude” by Barry Hennedy and “The Rut” by Alan Taylor. Congratulations, chaps! A further nine of our 30 entries earned a very respectable 17 points.
In addition to the impressive trophy, which the SPS has now won ten times and will be on show at our next meeting, it was pleasing to note that our 30 images came from 16 different members.
Sincere thanks to everyone who helped throughout the evening. Not just the committee members who were involved in the preparation but also everyone who swung into action by moving chairs and tables, plugging in, setting up, serving refreshments and cleaning up and packing away afterwards.
