Evening With David Silvester

David Silvester speaking to SPS members

Members were treated to a two-part evening with professional photographer and trainer David Silvester at our recent club night.

David runs a photographic studio and training centre not far from our venue in Colby and he has judged and presented to us previously, but this was an evening with a difference,

He began with a few images of the first wedding he photographed in July 1977 and pointed out the styles, fashion and poses of the time, followed by a slideshow of his work from weddings throughout the last 45 years.  Locations ranged from the Isle of Man to various European destinations, with some stunning images among them.

Moving on to his passion for motorsport, David showed motorcycle race photographs ranging from black and white film images of action and rider portraits through to the modern digital era, both here and in the UK. He also included a series from the Le Mans 24-Hour race, where he enjoyed pit lane access for almost 20 years, including some of his top-selling images in the Getty Images library.

He closed with composite images from his commercial studio work featuring innovative family groups and posed portraits of multiple dogs and puppies that were captured individually and assembled in post-processing.

After the break, David opened Adobe Lightroom and showed his typical workflow, this time for a Scottish landscape shoot, using the star rating system to select files, demonstrating how he would process a landscape and sometimes copying the editing settings to a series of images, and also covering file management and Meta fields.

David answered questions throughout and it was an interesting and entertaining evening with something for everyone.

Although he retired from wedding photography last year, David still runs training courses and his website is at https://manxphotographytraining.im/
