Those who attended the club night on 4th December enjoyed a fascinating presentation of images and stories by Dessie Robinson, who spent two years living and working on the Calf of Man as a Warden.
Life on the Calf was basic, with food arriving once a week by boat, water pumped from a well, electricity from a generator and light provided by torches and candles.
Dessie’s images were on slides so we had the rare sight of a slide projector in the room, accompanied by a relaxed, informative and often amusing commentary on each image.

He began by saying he feels judged when speaking to photographers and warned us not to expect expert pictures, but there were some stunning images in this collection showing the flora and fauna of the Calf.

Some of the highlights were the seal pups, but subjects included Dragonflies, moths and butterflies, plants like Teasel, Buddleia, Marsh Orchids, Fuchsia, Honeysuckle and heather, and birds like the Manx Shearwater, Shags, Swallows, Owls, Chough, Linnet, Cuckoo, Hen harrier and Merlin.

Thank you to Dessie for an enjoyable and interesting evening.
