For our March club night we welcomed back Chris Blyth for a photo presentation entitled “Journey Around the Pacific from Hawaii to Alaska”.

During the evening, Chris guided us through scenery and wildlife, and we learned about the “Ring of Fire” and tectonic plates that created the unique vegetation and birds of those regions.

Chris’ images covered Hawaii with the experience of three separate visits to visit family, before moving on to Washington and Oregon and locations ranging from the “small and laid back” Pacific City to the splendour of Mount St Helens and the Olympic National Park.

Moving on to Vancouver and a cruise through the Inside Passage to Alaska, Chris’ images featured the bald eagle, humpback whales, glaciers, sea otters and sea lions, kittiwakes and orcas.

But he wasn’t finished there and the presentation covered a scenic railway journey to Anchorage and stunning views of glaciers, before closing with a wonderful and varied selection from Katmai National Park, with the highlights being the salmon spawning at Brook Falls and the resident brown bears.

Chris shared anecdotes and images showing people learning fly-fishing in the water while being observed by bears, and the frequent warnings from rangers to stick to the paths and always keep your eyes peeled for the bears.

It was a fascinating and often entertaining presentation and highly recommended for its mixture of locations, history and especially Chris’ excellent selection of wildlife images.
