This update was intended to wish our readers a happy new year and draw attention to our next meetings.
However, as it has been confirmed that the Isle of Man is entering a three-week ‘circuit breaker’ period of lockdown, our meetings on 6th, 13th and 20th January are postponed, as are the deadlines for the next two competitions. The committee will work on rearranging those dates when possible.
In the meantime, stay safe and do keep taking photos.
On Wednesday, local professional photographer Clare Payne judged the ‘Food and Drink’ competition for us, which was the third regular competition of our season.
The theme encouraged a huge range of subjects and styles, from still life and close-up, to items on market stalls and people eating or cooking outdoors, to high-speed images of liquid frozen in motion.

The island’s three photographic societies met in St John’s last week for the annual “3-Way Battle”.
This year, it was the turn of the Western Photographic Society to host the Southern and Isle of Man Photographic Societies for this friendly digital competition, in which each club enters 30 digital images with no more than five by any one member.

Wednesday’s club night was a great success as guest James Brew gave another presentation of wonderful images, accompanied by generous advice and explanations.
The presentation was titled “Landscape Photography – The Importance of Planning” and featured locations all over the island at different times of day and night.

Before starting this second regular competition of the season, we remembered one of the club’s founders and a former long-serving member, Donald Gellion, who sadly passed away last week.
This was the season’s first ‘Open’, which, as always, meant the entries encompassed a wide range of subjects, styles and techniques. There were 27 prints and 57 digital entries.
