Barry Murphy visited us for the first time on Wednesday to judge the latest monthly competition, and his comments throughout contributed to an entertaining evening.
The SPS won the annual ‘Battle’ with the Western last month but the trophy was not there on the night so John Keelan, a member of both societies and Vice-Chair at the WPS, presented it to SPS Chair Andrea Thrussell at the beginning of the evening. He revealed that he ‘borrowed’ the small Lego cup on the plinth from his son many years ago and, as far as he knows, his son is still unaware!

A committee member of the IOMPS , Barry Murphy introduced himself with a brief history of his photography experience and the various genres he has explored, and he gave detailed critique with a touch of advice and personal opinion. You would not have known this was his first time as a judge and we are very grateful for his time and comments.
The theme of “Song/Book/Film Title” attracted several humorous entries and plays on words, and a mixture of archive and created images.
Jason, Georgina and Sue in particular had carefully selected props to create their images, Jason was dubbed “Composite Man” as Barry analysed his ‘Dambusters’ image, and Jim made a huge impression with his image of a toy Zebra in a block of ice at Port Erin Station for – you’ve guessed it – ‘Ice Station Zebra’!
Barry admitted that he found it hard to separate the top images, hence awarding a fourth place in the digital section. The results were as follows:
Print section:
1st: “Road to Nowhere” by Gwen Tuck – 20 points (top of page)
2nd: “Up Close and Personal” by Dave Salter – 19 points
3rd: “The Joker” by Georgina Shaw – 19 points

Digital Section:
1st: “Release Me” by Sue Clegg – 19 points
2nd: “Spiderman” by Georgina Shaw – 19 points
3rd: “Italian Job” by Jason Quayle – 19 points
4th: “Splash” by Dave Salter – 19 points

You can see see all of the digital entries in the 2019-20 Gallery section here on the website.
Jason will show us how he created his ‘Italian Job’ image as part of the Digital Art event on 18th March, which will start with Dave’s presentation on the challenges of water sports photography and some examples of his action images.
