Jimmy’s Wild Wanderings

On Wednesday 20th September we hosted Jimmy Thistle on a two-part club night.

We allocated the first part of the evening to view the latest print folios circulated by our regional body, the Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union.  It was another set of high-quality well-presented prints from the regional competitions, and the subjects and styles ranged from studio composites to stunning landscapes that you would hang on your wall, to dramatic sport and nature images.

Then we welcomed Jimmy Weir aka “Jimmy Thistle” for over an hour of local scenes, unusual viewpoints and little-known spots – often just a few steps off the beaten track.

His commentary was relaxed and amusing as he recounted his journey from commercial photography in Scotland to relocation to the IOM three years ago, which led to a rediscovered love of photography and his quest for “beauty in the mundane” and “photographs that make my eyes smile”.

With his small Canon EOS M50 and iPhone for photos, and camping gear on his back, Jimmy walked the 100-mile Raad ny Foillan in five days to raise funds for the charity Motiv8 in June, and we have donated to Motiv8 instead of the usual token of appreciation on the night.

You can see some of Jimmy’s work on his website at: https://www.jimmythistlephoto.com/ and on his Facebook page.

It was a popular talk and we are pleased that Jimmy will return to judge the “Abandoned” competition in January.
