The island’s three photographic societies met in Douglas last week for the annual “3-Way Battle”.
This year, it was the turn of the IOM Photographic Society to host the Western and Southern Photographic Societies for this digital competition, in which each club enters 30 images with no more than five by any one member.
It is a welcome opportunity to enjoy a variety of images while meeting members of the other clubs, and this year’s judge was the Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union President, James Hardy LRPS, who was visiting the island with his wife.
There were few high scores with the majority scoring 14 or below, and James offered advice throughout on how some images could have been approached or processed differently.
The overall result was:
1st: Isle of Man PS – 458 points
2nd: Western PS – 439 points
3nd: Southern PS – 421 points
David Salter of the Western won the individual trophy for “Tough Mann” (above), which was one of three images to receive the maximum 20 points. “Oreo” by Barry Murphy (IOMPS) and “Inle Lake at Dawn” by Sue Blythe (IOMPS) were the others.

The highest score for one of our entries was 18 points for “Speedway” by Brian Goldie (above).
The other SPS images receiving more than 14 points were “Kiteboarder” by Jim Gibson, “Summer Solstice” by Barry Hennedy and “For Our Next Song” by Peter Skears with 17 points, 16 points for “Petals” by Brian Goldie, and 15 points for “Puffin” by Alan Taylor, “Trapper’s Workshop” by Jason Quayle, “Fire Fighting” by Andrea Thrussell and “Heart Attack” by Brian Goldie.
Well done to everyone for their entries and especially to Brian for such a high individual contribution.
It will be our turn to host the competition next year.
