Mixed Practical Evening

Our March club night included a practical demonstration and sharing of techniques and images.

Steve brought in prints, mounts and tools to demonstrate how he presents his prints for competitions and uses the mounts, which he tries to recycle for a whole competition season.  It was an interesting exercise and led to some amusing questions and answers as everyone got involved.  Thank you to Steve for the suggestion and for setting it up.

The “RAW file swap” followed and in each instance we viewed the unprocessed file first and then everyone’s versions as they explained how they had edited them. The images encompassed nature, landscape and action, including a high ISO file with a lot of noise, and it was fascinating to learn how everyone approached the files and to see their final results.

Five members took part in the latest “8 in 10”, which was a very enjoyable segment with some wonderful images.

Angela’s eight images included a recent project about Cregneash village, a family wedding, architecture from a trip to Manchester just days earlier and the stunning Aster flower image seen in a competition earlier this season.

James split his time between his favourite subjects with a mixture of detailed wildlife images and a couple of dramatic bike racing images, one of them showing superb background blur from panning at 1/125th of a second although he said he has gone lower!

Seamus treated us to a selection of his arty flower images, mostly picked out against a plain background but one was a tulip set against a split black/white background, which was very effective.

Steve concentrated on nature and macro, which included a beautiful Barn Own in flight, a hare almost in his back garden, a close-up of a green shieldbug and a Blackbird set in a dark background.

Peter is another nature specialist and his images included the same Barn Owl in flight, which both he and Steve had photographed respectfully from a distance, a wallaby, squirrel and a lovely view of daffodils overlooking Port Erin.

Thank you to everyone who took part in a varied and interesting evening; it is always good to share and discuss images and to learn from each other.
