On Wednesday, local professional photographer Clare Payne judged the ‘Food and Drink’ competition for us, which was the third regular competition of our season.
The theme encouraged a huge range of subjects and styles, from still life and close-up, to items on market stalls and people eating or cooking outdoors, to high-speed images of liquid frozen in motion.
Clare is a generous and encouraging judge and it is always good to welcome her back to the club. Her experience in product and lifestyle photography was underlined by her observant and constructive comments, and hopefully everyone took something from her feedback. She explained that she was assessing composition, exposure, focus, creativity and (where applicable) use of colour.

In addition to the top three in both categories, which she described as “excellent” images, Clare said anything scoring more than 18 points was “magazine ready” (listed below) and congratulated everyone for the high standard of entries.

1st: ‘Coffee & Cake’ by Georgina Shaw – 19 points
2nd: ‘Bird Food’ by Georgina Shaw – 19 points

Well done to everyone for a great selection of images, many of which had clearly been created for this competition. There is a little break now before the next competition deadline, which is on 10th January for the next ‘open’.
In the meantime, the Christmas party takes place on 16th December.
