On Wednesday 30th October, local and international photographer and judge David Silvester assessed our entries for the ‘Vintage’ themed competition.
He began by saying “I’m going to tell you what you need to hear rather than what you want to hear” and proceeded to give his usual thorough critique of each image.
He reminded us of some key factors that he takes into account when looking at our images, summarised as follows:
- Viewpoint – don’t be ‘lazy’ by always shooting from eye-level. Try looking at your subject from a higher/lower angle.
- Presentation – he was pleased that the presentation of prints had improved since his last visit.
- Claustrophobia – let your subject breathe; don’t always crop/compose tightly at the edges.
- Backgrounds – check for untidy background or distractions, and move or edit if possible.
David was generous with advice about how images could be improved and we had a few laughs along the way as he assessed almost 70 images.
The results of the Print section are as follows:
1st: Vintage Racing Car by John Keelan – 18 points
2nd: Floating on Air by Dave Salter – 17 points
3rd: Vintage Still Working by John Keelan – 16 points
The results of the Digital section are as follows:
1st: A Polished Performance by Andrea Thrussell – 18 points
2nd: Matched Pair by Andrea Thrussell – 17 points
