On Friday evening we hosted the annual Inter-Club Digital Competition (“3-Way Battle”), which attracted almost 70 members and guests of the Southern, Isle of Man and Western Photographic Societies to our venue at Colby Football Club.

Each club enters 30 digital images, with no more than five by any individual, and we were treated to a great selection of images of all styles and genres, which were expertly and concisely summarised by judge Mike Radcliffe.

The scores ranged from 12 to 20 and the images were presented in alphabetical rather than the usual alternating order, which kept everyone guessing the totals until the end.

After finishing second last year the Southern Photographic Society only managed third this time, but the gap to the Western was a mere two points and we closed the gap on the IOMPS to just 18 points this year.

The final scores were:
IOMPS 458
Western 442
Southern 440

Two images achieved the maximum 20 points, both by IOMPS President Jeremy Broome-Smith, and the individual winner was his “Osprey With Fish”, a striking capture of the bird taking off from water with a fish in its talons (top of page).

Some notable scores from our members included an excellent 19 for Georgina Shaw’s “Lion-Tailed Macaque” (one of only four 19s), 18 for Georgina’s “Orchid”, and 17s for Brian Goldie’s “Losing It”, Georgina’s “Lynx” and Andrea Thrussell’s “Sunset Rocks”.

Instead of the usual token of appreciation Mike Radcliffe requested a donation to the Manx Wildlife Trust, which we are glad to do in addition to a bottle of wine and two of the club calendars. Our donation added to a bucket collection in the room amounted to £60, which we will forward to MWT in appreciation of Mike’s time and efforts.

Many thanks to the members who arrived early to set up, helped with the refreshments and stayed late to pack away and clean up.  The committee could not have managed without you. Thank you too to all the members who came to support the event and the IOMPS and WPS members who entered images and attended the evening. We hope you all enjoyed it.
