There was almost a full turnout of members for the 50th Anniversary dinner and presentations on Friday 18th June.
The Colby Glen Hotel was an excellent venue for the two-course meal organised by Sue Clegg, and Sue surprised everyone by baking a cake shaped like a Canon EOS camera and embellished with a gold 50. It tasted as good as it looked!
Following the meal, President Brian Goldie entertained everyone with extracts from a club journal from the 1970s, including debates that we still have nowadays about judges, the number of competitions (one year had 17!) and subscriptions. He discovered that the prize for print of the year in 1976 was £20, which equated to a week’s wages when he started work.
Brian noted that in 1999 the island’s photographic clubs were granted money to purchase a CD-writer to share between them, and that someone would have to learn how to use this contraption! He also reflected with some humour on his early days with the SPS as the transition took place from slides to digital, and the brief existence of the Southern Digital Photographic Society.
This was followed by the annual awards for achievements, with the trophies presented by Julie Goldie. This year’s winners are as follows, with a gallery of photos at the end:
